Heart of the School: Practical Approaches to Family and Community Engagement

This workshop is designed for educators looking to deepen their connection with families and the broader community. Featuring insights from Carlos Hernández, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Anaheim Union High School District, this session will draw on his extensive experience in fostering powerful community relationships and collaborative leadership. Carlos will share his perspective on the transformative impact of intentional engagement and offer practical approaches for building stronger school-community ties.

This discussion-based crowdsource workshop provides a collaborative space to explore and develop strategies for:

  • Cultivate a shared language to increase clarity and understanding for families.
  • Identifying “little things” that can make a big difference in fostering engagement.
  • Leverage key influencers to support families and community members who are not currently engaged.
  • Implement intentional communication strategies, including streamlining communication efforts.

About the Presenters

Raised in Detroit, Michigan, and later Anaheim, California, as the son of migrant parents from Jalisco, Mexico, Carlos was profoundly influenced by his educational journey within the Anaheim Union High School District. After earning a Mathematics degree from UCLA in 1999, he returned to his alma mater as a teacher. Over six years, he not only taught math but also led programs such as MESA and served in various leadership roles.

In 2005, Carlos became an assistant principal at Savanna High School, where he cultivated his skills as an instructional leader and emphasized the importance of community relationships. This led to principalships at South Junior High School and Savanna High School until 2017. Currently serving as Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Anaheim Union High School District, Carlos advocates for collaborative leadership, offering coaching and shared experiences to fellow educators. His journey exemplifies resilience and a commitment to empowering students and communities through education.
