Developing Maxims for Sherman County: A Model for Authentic Engagement

The most successful leader of all is the one who sees another picture not yet actualized. He sees the things which are not yet there… Above all, he should make his co-workers see that it is not his purpose which is to be achieved, but a common purpose, born of the desires and the activities of the group.

– Mary Parker Follett

Why Maxims Matter

Maxims—short, memorable statements that encapsulate core values and principles—serve as a compass for schools and communities. In Sherman County, the development of these maxims is grounded in the voices of students, ensuring that the resulting values reflect the diverse experiences, aspirations, and perspectives of the entire school community.

When created through authentic engagement, maxims:

  • Capture a Shared Vision: They unite staff, students, and families around common goals.
  • Provide Direction: They offer clarity for decision-making and priorities.
  • Inspire Ownership: When students help shape the maxims, they feel a stronger connection to their school’s identity.

What are maxims?

Maxims are statements that act as a school’s core drivers to equip and empower every student to pursue their passion, interests, and aspirations. They are used to highlight the areas of hidden strength already within a school. They can also be used as aspirational statements to reinforce the promises your school makes to the community. Maxims should be displayed widely and built into the daily curriculum, as a whole or in part, to familiarize your students and staff with them and embed them into the school culture.

The Sherman County Approach

Julia Fall, Sherman County’s superintendent, exemplified authentic leadership by personally spearheading the student engagement activities. Her approach was rooted in collaboration, transparency, and a deep commitment to student voice. Nearly 100% of students across grade levels participated in the process, thanks to her active presence and leadership.

Key highlights of the process include:

Staff-Led Foundations

The initiative began with staff activities facilitated by Inflexion, with Julia acting as a participant. Inflexion provided materials and guidance for Julia to extend the process to students.

By engaging staff first, the team ensured alignment and support before expanding the effort to students.

Student-Led Insights

Julia’s direct involvement with students was transformative. She modeled active listening by engaging with elementary, middle, and high school students in activities that encouraged creativity and self-expression.

Activities like the animal exercise were particularly effective for elementary students in making abstract concepts accessible and fun, fostering inclusivity even among the youngest participants.

A Commitment to Voice and Equity

Julia’s leadership highlighted the power of visible investment. Her hands-on involvement set the tone for authentic engagement, making students feel valued and heard.

Lessons for Other Communities

Sherman County’s process offers valuable lessons for other districts seeking to develop shared values and maxims:

Prioritize Leadership Involvement

When leaders actively participate, it signals the importance of the initiative and builds trust. Julia’s commitment created a ripple effect, inspiring nearly universal student participation.

Engage All Stakeholders

From staff to students, involving everyone in the process ensures that the final maxims truly represent the community. Tailor activities to the developmental levels of participants to make engagement meaningful for all.

Model Active Listening

Julia’s willingness to listen to students, not just facilitate, underscored the importance of their voices. This approach can help uncover insights that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Make It Fun and Inclusive

Activities like the animal exercise demonstrate how creative approaches can make abstract ideas more tangible and engaging, especially for younger students.

Moving Toward a Shared Vision

The maxims developed in Sherman County are more than words; they’re a reflection of a shared vision for the future. By fostering authentic engagement and prioritizing student voice, the district is creating a foundation of trust, ownership, and purpose that will guide its schools for years to come.
