Crowdsource Coffee: Using School Identity to Address Educator Exhaustion

Virtual Event Virtual Event

November 9, 2022 @ 10:00 am 11:00 am PST

About this event

Crowdsource Coffees are just-in-time conversations about topics relevant to leaders in the Portico community. These conversations are for school leaders to discuss shared challenges and exchange insights about what’s working as they transform the student experience and use inclusive leadership practices with their communities.

The beginning of the school year is an exciting time, but many educators are returning to their buildings already exhausted. A shared school identity–agreement on what a school stands for–is one tool for building a strong community, combating fatigue, and creating space for meaningful school change. This Crowdsource Coffee will feature discussion about how identity can be leveraged at this time in the school year, especially in the midst of staff shortages and low morale.

Before this event, we encourage leaders to take about 10 minutes in advance to review these two resources related to school identity and educator exhaustion:

National Educator Association: Beyond Burnout: What Must Be Done to Tackle the Educator Shortage

Portico Toolkit: Above and Below Elements of a School Community

If you only have five minutes or less, think about the following prompt:

  • What challenges are your teachers and your school facing this year? How can staff work together to address these challenges and work towards solutions? How do shared values and beliefs factor into this?

If you have more time, we encourage you to explore these resources and include them in your conversations:

These steps are optional, but highly recommended. So even if you don’t have any time, we still encourage you to attend!
