About this Event
Courtney Spelber, Former Principal at Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach Union High School District, discusses ways to use your second term to get started the right way by reinforcing your identity with your students and staff.
She shares how she uses school-wide activities connected to Ocean View’s values to remind everyone in their community about their shared identity, while at the same time creating opportunities for students to build better relationships with other students and staff.
In this workshop we will explore:
- How to authentically integrate academic rigor and learner profile traits—like inquiry—into culturally inclusive, student-centered activities.
- Strategies to build trust and connection with students through inquiry-based activities that center identity, culture, and lived experience.
- Ways to create a school culture that celebrates postsecondary pathways—including college, military, and trades—by fostering equity, inclusion, and belonging during key milestones.
By participating, you will be ready to:
- Design learning environments that prioritize student identity and community-building to reduce behavioral disruptions and increase engagement.
- Lead schoolwide initiatives that affirm all postsecondary paths and create visible celebrations of student futures.

About the Presenters
With a career spanning over two decades in education, Courtney Spelber has dedicated her professional journey to enhancing students’ academic experiences and holistic well-being. Beginning as a teacher, she transitioned into administrative roles, eventually assuming the pivotal position of principal at Ocean View High School. Currently serving as the Director of Student Services at the Huntington Beach Union High School District (HBUHSD), Courtney leads the MTSS team, prioritizing meaningful connections with each student. HBUHSD holds a steadfast belief in honoring every student’s individuality and providing equitable opportunities for growth and success.
