The Supe Scoop: Moving to a District Office Position

February 16, 2023 @ 10:00 am 11:00 am PST

Presented by: Ken Parshall

Many school leaders move into district-level administration for the same reasons they got into education: to have a positive impact on students and on public education and to use their leadership skills. This Crowdsource Coffee will provide space for current and aspiring superintendents to discuss the rewards and challenges of a central office position.

In this workshop we will explore:

  1. The journey of transitioning from a school leadership role into a central office or superintendent position while centering your purpose and why
  2. Key responsibilities and expectations that come with superintendent roles.
  3. Strategies for building effective, collaborative relationships between district offices and school sites.

By participating, you will be ready to:

  1. Understand the professional and personal considerations involved in pursuing district-level leadership.
  2. Navigate the challenges and embrace the rewards of working in a central office.

What I wished I would have known is that the work is always about relationships. I knew this at the school level as a teacher and as a principal, but I focused on the work more than relationships during my first few years. Once I migrated back to being myself and focusing on relationships to help others move the shared work I had more success and more peace.

The group gets smaller when you move up. You have to keep your personal relationships personal. People will lose trust in you as an objective school leader, making difficult decisions, if you can’t keep your personal and professional lives separate. Even the perception of unfairness can have a negative impact. You must know your “why” and how this new position fulfills your purpose.

The higher I got in my positions, the more important support staff was. I had to have social capital to deal with an emergency. In a school system, everyone play an important role and it’s essential to value everyone’s role.
