This workshop explores two powerful tools for fostering a cohesive and readiness-focused learning environment: Common Language and Learning Walks.
- Common Language: Using a shared set of vocabulary and routines across classrooms creates a sense of unity and consistency, supporting student learning and growth.
- Learning Walks: These brief classroom observations are used to provide feedback and share best practices. Learn how to conduct Learning Walks effectively and leverage them to support teachers and refine your school’s vision for readiness.

- Illustrate strategies for collaboration between educators and school leaders based on Learning Walk insights.

About the Presenters

Kate dedicated her entire career to the David Douglas School District in Portland, Oregon, beginning as a fourth and fifth-grade teacher before transitioning to district-level leadership overseeing K-12 Language Arts, Title I, Early Childhood, and new teacher support. She then served as a principal for 17 years across three diverse schools, each serving high-poverty and multilingual student populations. Her mission was to cultivate loving and supportive environments conducive to significant student growth. With advanced degrees in education and special education, she developed a wealth of strategies for equitable and inclusive practices, earning her the Oregon Principal of the Year and Nationally Distinguished Principal of the Year awards in 2021. In retirement, Kate continues to collaborate with educators as a professor at the University of Oregon, a consultant, and the co-author of “Principaled: Navigating the Leadership Learning Curve.” She also leads the New Principal Academy for Oregon and keynotes, presents, and leads webinars focusing on reflection, focus, connection, and care.

Alexa serves the Inflexion team as a Project Manager. She has a decade of experience in the dynamic worlds of communication and education and she is on a mission to spark brilliance in professionals through her thoughtfully designed workshops. Before joining the Inflexion team, Alexa served as a high school Special Educator in the New York City Department of Education and OHDELA Ohio State’s virtual high school after earning her Master of Science in Education from Long Island University, Brooklyn. She is a multi-hyphenate professional who is a published poet and writer with features in i-D Magazine’s Up + Rising Issue and Gumbo Magazine.
