Crowdsource Coffee: Elevating Diverse Ideas, Experiences, and Voices in School Communities

December 7, 2022 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am PST
Presented by: Ling Deng
Every member of a community, from students to teachers to staff, brings their unique experience and background to school each day. This Crowdsource Coffee will center discussion around how we acknowledge and elevate a diversity of voices.
In this workshop we will explore:
- What it means to elevate diverse voices and experiences at both individual and systems levels.
- How identity, intersectionality, and historical inequities shape who is heard in our schools.
- Ways to lead with a trauma-informed lens while avoiding tokenism and retraumatization.
By participating, you will be ready to:
- Reflect on how your current leadership practices include or exclude diverse voices.
- Apply strategies to engage your staff and students in inclusive, meaningful decision-making.
- Begin shifting your school culture to honor all identities through equitable structures and intentional listening.

For a long time, the only formal position every young person holds in society is that of student:
Every young person is a learner who attends school in order to meet society’s expectations of
them. That has changed. Today, young people increasingly have more important positions,
including that of decision-makers, planners, researchers, and more. The following Ladder of
Student Involvement in Schools was created to encourage students and adults to examine why
and how students participate throughout schools. Think of specific activities students are
involved in, and measure them against this tool.

This report outlines strategies to increase authentic student voice in education at the school, district, and state levels.
