Connect Career Interest with School Curriculum: Foster Student Engagement & Understanding of Relevance
Our job as teachers is not to “prepare” kids for something; our job is to help kids learn to prepare themselves for anything.

INTRO
Using MyNextMove.org, have students explore career options. Have the students make connections between what they learned, and the careers they are most interested in.
KNOW skills and behaviors include classic content knowledge and skills in core subject areas such as reading, writing, and math. It is not enough to have students learn high-quality content, they need to understand that success at learning content is a function of their effort much more than aptitude.
OBJECTIVES
- Brainstorm and start planning for how your school can incorporate Project Based Learning and/or cross-curricular experiences for all students
ACTIVITY
- Using MyNextMove.org, have students explore career options.
- Ask students what they learned in the last five days at school.
- Have the students make connections between what they learned, and the careers they are most interested in.
- Get creative about how they express the connections by encouraging them to use multiple forms of communication (writing, videos, song, social media posts, etc.)
TIPS
- Little Things, such as the above activity, are smaller efforts you can do tomorrow, or within the next week.
